What Hot Dogs Are Best for This Recipe?
I personally like the all-beef frankfurters because they have a great snap and a rich flavor that holds up well when baked. Occasionally, I also go for Vienna sausages or cocktail smokies. If anyone in your circle can’t eat pork or beef, chicken sausage can be a great alternative. But really, any brand your family and friends enjoy will work perfectly. And if you can only find bent sausages, that’s totally fine too - after all, they are millennia-old mummies!

What Cheese to Use for Hot Dog Mummies?
My kids and I love stuffing our hot dog mummies with cheese, just under the bandages, even though most recipes don’t call for it. We love how it makes them incredibly juicy, sweet, and gooey. If you haven’t tried it yet, give it a shot this Halloween!
I usually go for mozzarella because it’s easy to pull apart, but American, cheddar, or provolone work just as well. Slice the cheese into thin strips and spread it before wrapping the hot dog. Just be careful not to overfill, or it might ooze out too much.
How to Make Hot Dog Mummies?
Once you’ve got all the ingredients and gadgets in hands, it’s time to start making your own Halloween hot dog mummies. Before diving in, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step 1: Prepare the Crescent Dough
Take the crescent dough out of the can and lay it flat on the cutting board, with the longer side facing you. Pinch the seams of the crescent rolls together, then flip the dough over and do the same on the other side.

Then, slice along the short sides into 1/2-inch wide strips. For convenience, I used a pizza cutter, but any sharp knife will work fine if you don’t have one. Don’t worry if they aren’t perfect, as a few ragged edges will just add to the mummy effect. After that, cut the cheese slices into eight rectangles to wrap around the sausages.
Step 2: Wrap the Sausages Up
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and give it a light spray of cooking oil.
Wrap a slice of cheese around the hot dog, then take a strip of dough and wrap it around the cheese-covered hot dog. You’ll need about 2-3 strips of dough per hot dog. Depending on your preference, you can overlap the wraps slightly or leave some space in between, but just make sure to leave enough space at the top for the mummy’s eyes. Press the dough gently to seal it in place.
Continue this process until all your hot dogs are wrapped and ready to bake.

Step 3: Bake Hot Dog Mummies
Preparing for Halloween can be a rush, with so much to get ready and so many things to do, so it’s easy to lose track of time and accidentally overcook the hot dogs. That’s where my INKBIRD Wireless Thermometer becomes a lifesaver. I simply insert the probe horizontally inside the hot dog, set the target temperature to 160°F (71°C), and it'll notify me on my phone when it's done. This way, I’m neither overcooking nor undercooking to a safe standard.
Then, pop the hot dog mummies into the preheated oven and bake them until the dough is puffy and golden brown, which usually takes about 12-15 minutes.

Step 4: Give Them Eyes and Serve
Once the hot dogs have cooled slightly, add them eyes in the blank space using mustard or ketchup. These hot dog mummies are best served warm alongside your favorite dipping sauce.

Can I Make Hot Dog Mummies Ahead of Time?
Hot dog mummies are best baked immediately after they’re rolled, as they don’t take much time to prepare. If you assemble them too far in advance, the edges of the bandages may become less defined, making them look more like a sausage stuffed inside a bun. If you must make them ahead of time, just wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and keep them in the refrigerator for no more than 8 hours.

How to Store and Reheat Leftover Mummy Dogs?
Honestly, you’re unlikely to have any leftovers from these hot dog mummies, but if you do make a large batch, they make for a great lunch or snack. Once they’ve cooled down completely, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It’s best not to freeze them, as this will affect the texture of the dough.
For reheating, the oven or air fryer works best - just preheat to 350°F (175°C) and warm them up for about 5-10 minutes. Avoid microwaves, as this will make the pastry soggy.
